Hey Marla,
So, there's this other person who lives here besides James and Lorraine—Henry. He’s James Hahn's much younger brother. Henry is in his forties and there is some family resemblance, but they seem like completely different people! I mean, James is all boisterous energy and booming laughter while Henry… well, he’s a bit more subdued.
Henry has lived by himself in the Guest House since he returned from the Iraq War. Something happened to him over there that changed him—he came home quieter, more withdrawn. Despite his reclusive nature, he is fully functional...and happy. He takes care of himself, has a car, goes to the dentist twice a year and even a dog named Scout who is as sweet as pie.
Henry reads a lot and, now and then, helps James with the more physically demanding chores, such as moving a refrigerator or sawing fire wood. He has dinner with James and Lorraine once or twice a week. Lorraine wants me to always plan and cook our evening meals for four, including me. If he does not show up, I freeze any leftovers. Henry can cook but he loves leftovers and is always makes a special point to tell me that likes my cooking. He's a true gentleman.
Lorraine confided in me that Henry doesn't seem to like girls... or guys, so I don't need to worry about him in that way. My impression is that he is a nice, gentle person, though a bit strange.
It's funny because I think Henry is actually quite nice, but there’s definitely an air of mystery about him. He has this intense way of looking at things when he talks—which is seldom. It's almost like he’s trying to see right through you. Maybe that's part of the reason he keeps to himself.
Anyway, I haven't had a chance to chat with him much yet. He seems like a nice and gentle person, but I have this feeling there's a whole story waiting to be told. Maybe one day we’ll sit down and share some tea (or whatever it is people drink these days) and I can get the lowdown on Henry Hahn.
Talk soon!
